United State is a superpower country that has its own system for electing the leaders. The system used is a system that is considered suitable to be applied in the country. This country has a presidential system of government which means a president is the one who leads the country. With a large number of people this country has and to find the way out of choosing between direct elections and elections through the US congress, they decided to choose to carry out the election by forming an institution called the Electoral College.
Electoral college is the council that has the right to choose candidates to win elections. This system first appeared in 1787 and has been listed in the American Constitution in Article II Section I. Out of the 50 states in America, the total number of electoral college member is 538. In each of these states, 2 senators are chosen. America has a total of around 100 senators, then the remaining 435 electoral college members are representatives of congressmen based on the number of residents in the state. This method can be said to be an indirect election because the people’s votes are represented by the voting council.
The process carried out by this council consists of electing the elector. Meeting of elector to elect the president and vice president, and finally vote counting by the congress. The Governor of each state will issue a ‘certificate of ascertainment’ which lists the names of all the presidential candidates in the state along with the names of the electors. The certificate also lists the names of the presidential candidates who won in each state. Then, the electors held a meeting to elect the president and vice president elected from each state in a separate vote. This electoral vote is recorded in the ‘vote certificate’. Which will be sent to the Congress and the National Archives as the official archive of the presidential elections.
The plenary meeting is held to count the electoral votes obtained by this meeting. This meeting is also attended by the members of The People’s Representative Council and The Senate. Later on, the official results of this meeting will result the president candidate who gets the most votes. Then, on the voting day, the victory of the elected president will be announced by the head of The Senate. This system also makes the electoral votes as the official vote reference, not the popular votes.
The US elections are held every four years in November in even years and the elections was always held on Tuesday. Previously, there were some controversial events due to this electoral system. A lot of people still debate the popular votes and electoral votes which the results are not always the people’s choice.
